One needs to design a curriculum that includes a sequence of required courses and some specialization courses. See our curriculum here: http://engineering.nyu.edu/mechatronics/mechatronics-robotics-ms/.
Our curriculum includes required courses in mechatronics, advanced mechatronics, robot mechanics, and simulation tools for mechatronics. Specialization requires two courses in the specialty area (assistive mechatronic technologies, mobile robotics, and microrobotics). All students have to do six credits of project or thesis work. Many courses require hands-on, project-based learning through which topics such as home automation, medical applications, smart cities, IoT, among others are addressed.
